A Brief History

Halton Credit Union was formed in 2002, after an amalgamation of 3 smaller Credit Unions in Halton; Castlefields, Priory and Widnes. This was the first amalgamation of it’s kind in the country, and took 2 years to push through.

Halton Credit Union is a live or work credit union, this means that if you live or work within the borough of Halton, you are eligible to join. Our Membership has grown dramatically over the past few years, making us one of the fastest growing Credit Unions in the UK.

We are proud to retain many volunteers and board members (who are also volunteers) from those original Credit Unions. This has allowed us to keep the same ethos, albeit on a larger scale, that we started with all those many years ago. Being here to serve you, our members will always be our main focus.

Since 02 January 2002, Halton Credit Union has allocated over 30,000 loans (up until September 2012), to a value of £14.3 Million, and over £1 Million since October 2012. This has saved our members over £12 Million in Interest charges based upon 272.2% APR, as charged by some doorstep lenders.

We work in a more automated way, which has meant we have been able to speed up many processes for the members.

Universal Credit is still there in the background, obviously the deadline for the switch over has been pushed back.

Manager Report

I want to start with thanking once again our staff and volunteers who make the smooth running of this credit union, seamless and transparent. The Board for always keeping a steady hand at the helm.

The Financial Services Authority was closed and separated into two organisations, the Financial Conduct Authority and the Prudential Regulatory Authority who now regulate credit unions.Over the past year we have covered many areas and here are a few; -

  • A reduction in the insurance premiums with no loss of cover for our members.
  • A survey of members was conducted 87% replied and of that 99% were extremely or very satisfied with the survey. Points requested from the survey included having an outlet in Widnes ability to pay by debit card; quicker loan turnaround; access on line; no change required;. From this we now turn loans around in 3 days and share withdrawals are the next day. The web site can now be accessed for information and a loan calculator. We are testing account access, and then members will need to apply for passwords to access their details via the web site.
  • The AGM in March saw four new Board members approved by the new regulators
  • Corporate membership agreed with Halton Housing Trust and approved by the FSC.
  • Funding for a household goods loan (loan 2) was achieved from Riverside, Halton Housing Trust and Liverpool Housing Trust totalling 35k.
  • Due to the changes regarding debtor creditor supplier agreements and the licence required to carry out this third party business, it was decided that we would no longer carry out third party agreements.

I am confident that we will continue to deliver a first class service in the knowledge that I believe we do make a difference.
